Just wanted to share that this gauge works awesome. Here is a video of it in action I posted on youtube. A few sun glares, and the usual video flicker caused by the camera, but it give you an idea....

Yes, I believe you are correct that sand is a big factor. I got my gauge installed yesterday. Pretty cool to see a digital "real-time" readout of the actual temp.456457
