When FRS/GMRS and cell fail.....Ham Radios will get you out of a jam.
Ham Radio Licenses are easy to get. Since the explosion of CELL PHONES.....Ham Radio has been hurt. The thought was to lower the requirements to become a ham. The test is easy, the code has been dropped.
2 meter / 440 handheld is what most off road folks use. Hikers etc. They use repeaters on mountain tops.
I can talk to my buddy while I'm in Tahoe and hes in his living room in Hercules Ca. On a walkie talkie. (HT). Using the 147.195 repeater on Mt Vaca.
From my car I can talk to Texas on same band using a linked repeater system.
You'll want to carry a repeater book that gives you repeaters for the areas you're in. If in an area more than one, program that system into your radio.
Radios can be purchased for $175.00 or more.
I've been a ham for a while. KD6ILY. Matt
