Were you up there with Ben?
Printable View
That was the original plan... I ended up going to Buck Island Friday night and then two of the four vehicles I was traveling with were having trouble so we limped them down to Rubicon Springs and camped there Saturday night, and went out Cadillac on Sunday, so we never saw Ben. Original plan included backtracking from Buck Island on Saturday morning in the hope of meeting up with his group and traveling back to Buck, in case anyone needed mechanical assistance or help spotting, etc and then camping with him Saturday night, but the vehicles would not cooperate.

About 2.5 Weeks to go... Any questions regarding what to bring or setup of the vehicle? I will be leaving Oroville at around 1:30-2:00pm on Friday, Aug 17th which should put me up there around 6:00pm.
We will be showing up early Saturday morning. With that said, is there a parking/staging area for my truck and trailer to be parked over night without getting a campsite?

We will be camped just in from the trailhead Friday night. I will make sure to walk you, (and any others that don't come in until the morning), in Saturday morning, sometime around 7:30-8:00 Camp is only a few minutes from where you will need to park your tow vehicle.

Ken, since I haven't got a new rzr yet, it looks like you will be heading up the ride. Hopefully I'll be able to get one soon and be on the next trip. Have a great time guys and be safe.

Neil, I was hoping you would slide in sideways at the last minute! Let me know if you need help setting up your new RZR when you get it, so we can have you on the next one. Everything healing OK, from the accident? It looks like there are 14 vehicles planning on going, between two groups, so it should be a great trip.
Sounds good, thanks. Yes, I am healing. I went back to work on full duty about 2 weeks ago. Just in time to work nonstop on these fires. I worked about 100 hours this week. My shoulder is sore but it's getting better. Can't wait to be back at it and on the trails again.

Meal wise. Potluck or dog eat dog?

Hadn't even thought about it. Often times, on Rubicon, we have a potluck, but that is when I am in my Landcruiser with lots of room to carry stuff; We usually have "Taco Night" where everyone brings their own taco meat and something to add (Salsa, Carnitas, Beans, Onion, etc). I will be taking a small ice chest, small one-burner stove but no barbeque and all the signs say "No Fires" in Eldorado National Forest. Any suggestions for dinner on Saturday night?

All loaded except for my ice chest. I have my springs jacked up, nut not quite as high as jeepalive. I have high clearance lower arms and about 17.5-18 inches clearance at the belly with 32" tires, fully loaded except people and ice chest food, but I was trying to also keep the axle joints from maxing out their angles so I didn't crank it all the way up. What do you guys think?
Attachment 2842 Thanks! I don't know how you guys adjust these springs in a timely manner... My original tool is really hard to use on the front, particularly on the driver's side. I took 45 minutes and made a tool that I use with a 3/8" extension and ratchet wrench and now I can turn it 1/2 turn at a time.

I don’t use any tools.... except to loosen up the lock ring. I blow off the threads with air, brush threads with toothbrush, WD40 the very bottom of the spring where it touches the plate. Then rotate the springs which move the collar down. Adjusted all 4 in about 1-1-5 hours[emoji1360]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9d2cec4ed8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5229501e57.jpg

Heads up guys... slight change of plans that shouldn't negatively affect anyone (actually, I think it will make the ride better!!), but just wanted to let everyone know that we are tossing around the idea of NOT staying at Buck Island, but rather, continuing through the trail, up Cadillac Hill and then turning around somewhere beyond (perhaps depending upon the time of day at this point) and going back to camp at Rubicon Springs Saturday evening. There is a $15 fee, per vehicle, at the springs and they have pit toilets. The reasoning for the change is that SxS's move relatively quickly through Rubicon, compared to a Jeep or other full-sized vehicle, so this will keep us occupied for longer, and give more the the "Rubicon Experience" to the newbies that may not have been through the complete trail. Let me know what you think.
This new tool got all four adjusted in 15 minutes... well... after taking 45 minutes to make the tool... I just cleaned the threads, and used some of my Gun Cleaning/Lubricating spray and then spun them down with my "crows foot" with a floor jack lifting the vehicle to relieve pressure from the spring.
