I'm wanting to make this ride which will be my first one with a big group, I'm looking into getting a handheld radio to be able to stay in touch with everyone but do you need a ham license for the radios everyone will be using?
Reading more on Google and I may be wrong about needing an amateur license. Someones gotta known here with all the radio users.
Narrowing the model as we get closer...
Now the Carson forecast for Saturday is 30% showers in the AM and 61 degrees, so the guessing continues.

This is what I have works great
25/50 Watt? Is it a Marine radio? It's legal on water. On land I think .5 watt is max without license
We used 5 watt radios at race track never bothered with licences. I did do some reading FCC requires licence anything over .5 watts. GMRS licence $90 good for five years. Unless there are complaints I doubt FCC even pays attention
Well Weather report does not look like it wants us to have a B.B.Q Saturday
No Fun B.B.Qing is Rain
How-ever Way Fun to Ride in Can't Wait!!!
so looks like I'm not making it this trip :( went to go move the rzr to get things ready for this weekend. Come to find out i have a sticky clutch, buttons and rollers are bad in my primary and parts won't be here in time to fix it up!! So I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!! and hopefully it works out for me on the next one .
No need for a ham license to operate these radios as 95% of users are not individually licensed neither. The closest ham band is 144-148 Mhz called the 2 Meter band, and all of the 92 pre programmed Rugged Radio racing/etc. frequencies are between 151-155 Mhz.
While not 100% legal, you will be fine for using these radios. Loosely speaking, RR has cleared the way to sell you their radio and allow you to use it "unerneath their license" so to speak.
I had a cousin pass away and her service will be this coming Sunday, so scratch me for Sunday. Saturday, however, is still a go for me as long as I leave right after the ride so we can travel west Saturday night for the early service on Sunday. Its going to be a long day, but a good one, at least early on.
They are now forecasting cloudy with a 70% chance of rain and temp 59F for Saturday in Carson City. RainX might be called for...
I bet no rain maybe a little chilly should be great time
I need to be scratched from this ride also, just sold our house and have to be out by April 29th. We still need to find a place to live. Nevada here we come!!!
We will be living in our trailer until we get a home. We will only be 45 mins from Sand Mountain. Can't wait!!

We got us a way-good convoy!
Weather now looking like 80% rain with a high of 58 degrees. Yowza!
Is it just me, or is the link the staging and camping area in all the posts pulling up a location in Emeryville CA on Google maps? In 3 different browsers...
I won't be able to make it either, just to many things going on right now. You guys have a good time, I'll be checking out the pictures. [emoji106]

Moving to Ferntucky or Fallabama? Now is a great time to get a house out here before property values start going up crazy fast again. People getting above water in their mortgages and selling in CA combined with all the tech companies coming to Reno, the area is going to explode.
Nothing like a little weather to thin out the heard.. It's gonna be a lot of fun..[emoji106]
