Who all has changed their bearings in the transmission on their RZR's?

I am going to change mine after a few failures others had at Sand Mountain. Just not sure if I am going to pay to have it done or do it myself. I would have Ben do it but he is almost 700 miles away.

Any advice from any of those who changed them out themselves? How difficult is it?

I did mine in my XP900 and it was pretty easy . From what i have seen you do Tim you should have no problem .

Ed, can you list the needed bearings it takes to do this job. I have a list but want to make sure it list all the bearings that need to be changed.
I assume they are "open" not sealed bearings since they are in a oil bath application?
Any advice before I tear into it? Tips or tricks?

Tim mine was a 900 not sure if there the same bearings or not . They were open bearings . It was for the most part straight forward .

My understanding is the 900 and 1K are the same.

yes and no.. some parts are diff but bearings the same. the highlifter trans is better in some ways and the 925 turbo is better yet but dont know if it fits...steve watson has the part numbers as does milos...i seem to of miss placed in my move but im looking

I'll have to find the part numbers. You'll need a 3 jaw puller to change the bearing and a press. A clutch alignment tool to line the transmission back up and a special socket to tighten the transmission to engine bolts. I made a socket by cutting apart 2 sockets and welding them together. Polaris sells the socket though. They sell the alignment tool too but there are after market companies with way better tools. Like Sparks Racing and a couple others. The socket and clutch tool is good to have for future maintenance. That is critical to good belt life. Make sure you seal the cases good polaris has had allot of leaking transmissions over the years. Oh and yes they are open bearing made for oil bath.

I guess I was lucky because I didn't have a clutch alignment tool and don't remember needing a special socket for the trans bolts .

You need the socket to tighten the lock nuts on the transmission adjusters. You tighten the adjuster to take the gap up in the mounts to a torque spec then tighten the lock nuts to hold the adjuster in place then tighten the transmission to engine bolts. Not taking those steps puts pressure on the cast aluminum mounting tabs. I suggest you get the tools and do it like the book says. These cases are known for breaking.

I ordered all the bearings and a clutch alignment tool. Should have them by the end of the week. I'm replacing 8 bearings. Figured since I am in there, might as well change them all out.
If all the parts get here by Friday I plan on getting started on this project.

Why not the other 2 bearings for a total of 10, Tim?

I did notice the polaris tool comes bent. It's just a huge rip off what they charge for about 50 cents worth of steel. Lol There are way better tools made by the aftermarket

Buy a new RZR and you have to spend more money to repair-em, Pay top dollar and they put in bottom dollar shit in-em

That is what is stopping me from getting new-one

Turtle Tim

Why not the other 2 bearings for a total of 10, Tim?

Polaris uses good Japanese bearings for the other two. It looks like they used a higher quality bearing on the output shafts so they could take the higher load those bearings would have on them? Just guessing as to why they used Japanese bearings in those locations.
Smarter guys like Ben or JC8 would probably know the reason why the different bearings.

simple answer its all about cost savings... if you can save .10 over 1 million units thats a savings/profit of $100,000 do that x8 thats close to a million bucks saved. adds up fast do this all over the unit and you now see the big pic... happens in any form of manufacturing little things like that can save a corp billions a year

Started working on it today.
Intake plenum was a PIA to get out. Seemed like I spent more time on getting the plenum out than the rest of the removal.

Got all the bearings replaced, buttoned up the case and back in the rzr.
The bearings are a piece of cake to replace. Had to modify the bearing puller to get between one of the gears and bearing. Space was tight and had to grind the jaws flat to fit.
Just heated the bearings up in the oven and they slid right on. Only a couple I had to tap a little to seat.
I did this by myself, and probably the hardest part was getting the tranny out and back in. It wasn't super hard, just awkward and I would recommend a second person if one is available. Intake plenum was a pain, not hard, just frustrating to get out. Easier getting it back on cuz I put it in before bolting the tranny up. Way easier with the tranny loose.

It took me most of the day to get the bearings swapped and put everything back together. But actual time wasn't that bad.
Right after getting the bearings pulled, my daughter called and her car wouldn't start. So I dropped everything and spent some time out in the heavy rain at her house trying to figure that out. Looks like I have to replace her starter today if I can get one.
Lost one of the springs for the exhaust, and cant find it? Amazing how things can disappear in the garage!
Several calls from work that I had to deal with.
And one other snafu that I won't share here! Maybe around the campfire some day.
The actual job of changing the bearings wasn't that bad, all the extraneous crap drove me nuts!!

BTW...Want to thank Jack for some tips and putting together the list of bearings. His is the most complete list for this I have seen.
It will be a while before I get a chance to try it out. I pulled my front shocks and boxed them up to send to Zbroz. Need to have them replace the seals, was leaking slightly.
Also got the starter replaced on the daughters car, worked on it outside and rain came down harder than a cow pissing on a flat rock the whole time! I'm done wrenching for this weekend.
