I did a ride this weekend with a small group up at stampede res. and all of the group had had Radios. They all had the Vertex 2200 50 watt radios. We were separated about 10 miles or so and the and I was beside the lead car and he was talking to the sweeper car clear as a bell. I found these radios on Amazon for under 250.00. In the Rugged radios for 500.00. I ordered mine today. Great riding up there if you ever get the chance to go.http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/80d2958c176a212582d0a66c48176f9b.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/b335d70e714845373291c772e9258a92.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/ac782d7f5bdb3df4eab160e473a378b5.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/e959c039eedbad7a22870c651e905d54.jpgthis is the view from the abandoned lookout at Verdi Peak.

Did you get the VHF version of radio I hope? When you get it send me a pm and I'll help you with the programming file if you need.

They had 1 that was uhf only and one vhf only and they had one that had both. All of them were the same price. I figured if I got the one that had both that I would be covered. If that's not so, please let me know as I know NOTHING about electronics. Thanks

If you want a VHF only radio I'd get this one:http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/fm_txvrs/2900.html

And a dual band this one:http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/fm_txvrs/0790.html

Both require a simple mod to transmit in the areas where you will need. These are cheaper, easier to program, and easier to get aftermarket parts for than the Vertex series. The Vertex is a little tougher unit as they are for public service/business.

Here's the instructions for the 2900 mod:http://www.worldwidedx.com/threads/yaesu-ft-2900r-frequency-modification-mars-mod.44185/

To me, everything is hard to do by hand with the Baofeng! With the programming software it's super easy as long as you know the freq/offset/tone/codes. I have lots of the LEO and fire in mine but block transmit so you don't break the law and cause interference accidentally. I know how to turn the transmit on manually so I can call out if needed.

Another consideration is if they are using a digital format down there. Lots of agencies are moving that way...in this case the Baofeng wont work. All you will get is machine noise. Radio Reference is a good place to get that info as those guys are way geeked out on scanners and some radios.

From what I've seen it will only take a few of us with the higher powered radios at each end or middle that can relay any trouble from those in between with the 5 watt radios. So it should work for everyone. We'll just have to identify that at the pre ride meeting and place those riders in a sequence that keeps everyone safe. Thanks for the help. As alphabaz, I will need to attend your tutorial on programming. [emoji16]

Remember, power output and radio type is not as important as the antenna type, placement, and installation. Then you have the issues of people forgetting to turn the radio on, getting on the right channel, turning the volume up so they can hear, etc......

Good job! There is also a spot somewhere in the software where you can make the radio show your name. Being that they all look the same, it might be good to add that.

You might tune to one of the FRS channels and see if there is activity. Neighborhood kids around here are always on them. They might not come back to you if they have the CTS tone enabled and you will also have twice the transmit range they do at 5 watts output, but you will have a more sensitive receiver.

The mag mount more than likely is not going to stay on. They also don't require a ground. Save that one for your truck when you are traveling in a group and get a good NMO mount style antenna for the buggy. Rugged has some clamp on billet mounts, weld on a tab to your cage, or mount righ to your roof if it's metal.

Yes, it is within the freq range of most of the radios we will use, but the channels it transmits on are for marine use only and not legal for land mobile use. Some people do it, but I wont.

I don't have a cable for the FT2900 unless it's the same as the FT2800. The chirp software might cover the 2900, but have not looked into it either.

Are you going to hook it into a Rugged intercom? If not, you might consider the TYT9800 on Amazon. It's only a few $$$ more and gets you way more flexibility. Since it's an import, it doesn't have to be modified either. You are probably hung up on the 75w output, but honestly it's hardly any difference between 50w and 75w.....just like stereo stuff, it takes 10X more power to double the signal or 3db. Usually easier, safer, and cheaper to double it with the right antenna.

Rugged might even have a cable for the TYT, I just have not looked yet. They do make one for the Yaesu FT7900 though....another excellent dual band choice. Chirp supports it too.

Either way, I have a freq chart and you could face program a couple of freqs without the computer.

Edit: It appears Chirp will program the FT2900 and the 2800 cable appears to be the same. I would advise you have your own so you can make changes later.

I went ahead and ordered one of the little rugged handhelds. That will give me more time to talk to you and other guys about radio options. Plus, I hope to have a new rig sometime soon. Does the handheld need programming?

It comes ready to run Cory. It doesn't come with the JeepSpeed/MURS channel though. If you order a programming cord for a few $$$$, you could modify it's programming pretty easy.

Rugged used to have the freq list available on their site, but it is now password protected. My guess is there were a few modifying ham radios, loading them with Rugged's list, and offering them for sale.

That said.....

Access to Rugged Radio 91 preprogrammed alpha to numeric conversion list is:

Username: rugged
Password: radio

I loaded it into my tablet for reference to program my radio to any of their channels anytime....still learning as this is the first time I've used both, but I LOVE IT so far!

Nice!

One thing I ran in to programming Ed's Baofeng UV5R was that there are many different firmwares within the same model radio. The one that is listed on the radio's startup screen isn't necessarily the one that is loaded into it. It is important to first read your radio and save an image of it's OEM programming and firmware and work from it.

I turned Ed's radio almost into a brick that would transmit and not receive for a few mins....... Google is your friend! I found a site that had recovery info. :)

I received my radio and tablet gear just a few days before we blew out to Ocotillo Wells...did a super sanitary install of everything, but overlooked one BIG issue that didn't reveal itself until we went riding.

The amateur radio VHF transmit on is 144-148 and all of Ruggeds frequencies are 151-156, so I can hear everything all are saying, but can't transmit. BLR is always talking chit about me and the Rhino on rides knowing I can hear her but can't respond in retaliation!...lol

I didn't realize the transmit frequency didn't include Ruggeds until I actual READ THE BOOK!!...ha-ha.....when we get back home, will do the MARS/CAP on it.

Corey, make sure first you read your radio's OEM program/firmware and save it in a safe location. Otherwise you may load it with a bad file and loose receive on your new radio. Ill PM you a link to the file I'm using for others' handhelds.......Copy and paste to YOUR radio's open file and you will be ready to rock.

I got Barry on freq tonight too.

Something else you guys might want to do is "Lock" your keypad so it wont get changed accidentally while riding around. More often than not it is the distance peeps place their microphone from their mouths. We had a couple quiet ones down in Ocotillo during preride...the leader would tell "Joe" to move his mike where it was almost touching his lips....that was the issue with them.

That's a pretty good deal for a dual bander. Looks like it actually rolled off the Yaesu line....... The thing I worry about most with suggesting these radios is that pushing one button could make it inoperable for an end user who didn't take the time to learn it's functions. While the commercial stuff is expensive, they can be made idiot proof so there is no way things could go off track...No insults intended! ;)

I hear ya Lance! We have been having issues locally over the past 4-5 years since the Chinese handhelds hit the market. People just don't understand that this little toy "Walkie Talkie" can cause major communication problems if used improperly.

The freqs Rugged comes programmed with are problem enough. As more people buy/use these pre-programmed off road radios, the FCC will move their illegal use to the top of the list. Mark my words......It will be an expensive mistake for the end user.
