I've only been to the High lakes area out of Chico a couple times, I would like to see this ride on the calendar at some point, I think that's there some campgrounds up there too.

I agree with Mike621. High lakes are sweet! I can also take the group on a Cohasset run that's pretty amazing too!http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/12/cfe0beb01afefbf5624c7b878770a6aa.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/12/d739373197e9a793e5e906232bf9467d.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/12/23971e9e5c7a46d79beafc6909e63d8d.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/12/f1139e9e6d1a14c72dc0670c100a3f9b.jpg

By the way things look as of now for my-self
I will not have my RZR repaired till the middle of August if I am Lucky
Am to Tight to take it in and have others do what I enjoy doing
Have way to much work at this time to do any-thing for the next month or so

We had planned to be in Wendover, UT (Bonneville Speed Week) but they just cancelled the event because of salt conditions. Who can tell us what/where the "high lakes" area is?

The high lakes area is above Chico .
Tony (CrazyCooter) will be leading this ride .

Here is a little taste of what is in the area:http://www.friendsofthehighlakes.com/lakes.shtml
There is some hardcore rocky stuff in this trail system as shown in the pics, but I think our goal will be to run trails with some challenge but minimal chance for damage. Last few times I was here it was in a Jeep and rode once on a motorcycle.

I've heard there are some pretty rocky trails up there, I've been up there a few times on Quads, all the trails we were on we're a mix of fast, and rocky, kind of like Castle Crags. Should be a fun ride [emoji106]

I mite try this ride but most likely be on a Canam Renegade 500 sport utility quad .with this ride be quad friendly?
CrazyCooter
07-21-2015, 09:39 PM
I don't see any reason why a quad wouldn't be doable. I remember a couple of spots that might make short wheelbase challenging but nothing impossible for an experienced rider like you.
Terrain is much like the Tamarak area but with more water and vegetation.

If there are some people going up for the day that knows the way, maybe I can meet with them down in Chico and follow them up. I haven't been there before.

OK , the staging area had been picked and it is going to be at the intersection of Skyway and Jones Meadow in Inskip , CA . The meeting time is going to be around 8:30 Am . We would like to start the ride (be leaving ) at 9:00 AM . The best way to get here is take the Skyway exit off HWY 99 in Chico and go east towards Paradise till you get to Inskip (approx 30 miles) . When you get to Inskip the first street past the Hotel is Jones Meadow , turn right and look for some place to park . On google earth looks like there should be plenty of turn outs on the side of the road for us all to park.

Thanks, Ed!!
Still trying to decide whether we will camp or just make it a day ride.
1. Do we plan to meet there, and drive further before we unload, or will we ride right from Inskip?
2. Any local knowledge about best campgrounds nearby?
Thanks, Ed!!

The intersection is Browns Ravine and Skyway: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/39.9914314,-121.5413391//@39.9902313,-121.5430128,16z?hl=en This area is private land from what I can gather on the map and is home to the historic Inskip Hotel. We used to just travel up the road a mile or two, unload at a wide spot, and run the Skyway North to the Philbook cutoff, and turn right. If you look at the satellite imagery, you will see the double yellow painted line start right there and this is where the dirt used to start.
Browns Ravine is the only way I see getting around to Philbrook and then to the High Lakes on dirt public forest roads. This is why I think this is the best place to park...... There are some wide spots right on the side of Browns Ravine within 1 mile of the pavement.
The issue here is that the pavement used to end right at this pin and the "Forest Circus" did us a favor and paved it! Nobody in the group seems to know a legal route from a good camping spot at this point unless you want to drive in deep with your trailers and camp at Philbrook Lake where I have seen a few toyhaulers there. Last time I was in there it was partially paved/dirt from the Skyway/Philbrook cutoff as well as dirt from Inskip and I remember thinking no way in hell would I tow in here!
There are many ways in off Hwy 70 as well. Maybe we need to look down there on this ride for better future staging/camping areas although this area lends itself of remote back country camping due to the terrain.
If someone has some knowledge of the area to add, this would be a good time!

On Yahoo Maps it shows the road as Jones Meadow at Skyway and changes to Browns Ravine when you cross the river so I guess depending on what map you use the intersections name can change .

I was looking at Philbrook as well. If Patti comes with me, she likes camping near a lake (for the dog). The problem is that I just don't know what the road is like. I may go explore one day next week in my little car to see if getting the trailer in there is reasonable.

I'm going to check out the staging area and campground near there tomorrow .
Staging place for August High Lakes ride change.
I don't like changing things but I drove out and checked everything out today and the area that Tony & I picked will not work , no place to park everyone. So I dove all around and found that the Snowmobile park that Frank had mentioned appx 6 miles up the road from Bambi Inn will work great. The best part is that it's easier to get to. To get there from HWY 99 in Chico you go East on HWY 32 to Humboldt Rd and continue up Humboldt Rd towards Jonesville and you will see the snowmobile park on the left . We are panning on meeting the at 8:30 AM so we can get the ride on it's way by 9:00 AM .

OK...... According to map quest, it is only 5.6 miles from the Bambi Inn to Jonesville. So is the Snowmobile park east or west of Jonesville? Did you happen to notice Cherry Hill Campground? It should also be right there. Still haven't decided whether we will go up Friday and camp or just make it a day trip Saturday, but I will be there.

It is Jonesville snowmobile park ! I drove by Cherry Hill but didn't pay attention to it. There is a big dirt area across the street from Bambi Inn that there was a few trailers parked there . I asked they guy in Bambi Inn about it but I think he used everything up getting out of bed !!

Patti and I took a ride up to check out the campgrounds yesterday. The closest one, Cherry Hill, is really meant for tent campers. Nice setting along the creek, but only a few sites that would work for RVs. We actually talked to one of the locals about just parking our trailer in the Jonesville snowmobile area parking lot. He said he couldn't imagine anyone would give us a hard time for that.
Just wondering though, will we be riding right from the snowmobile staging area? I only saw paved road and private property signs all around there.
We also chatted with the proprietors of "The Outpost" (local restaurant), who encouraged us to come back for their "all you can eat BBQ dinner" on the weekend.

Well Bob Lain came over the other day, and we were in the garage, he noticed my driver side wheel looked bent in.
Checked it out today and the main frame is bent in from the bottom, and the upper a-arm bracket on the frame is bent in[emoji51]
Called the insurance company and talk to the guy, he's coming to look at it tomorrow , told me it sounds like total loss, cause they don't fix frames.
If Bob and I make this ride, looks like we'll be on the quads.
Last ride at Castle Craig I hit that stump in the trail pretty hard, it threw me sideways , that must of did it.

Ed, how far is it from hwy 32. Do you go past Bambi inn or is it before that

From 99 in Chico:
Take the CA-32 exit, EXIT 385, toward Orland/Chester. Go 27.6 mi
Turn right onto Humboldt Rd. Go 10.9 mi to Snowmobile Park on left

Jonesville is NOT a sprawling metropolis, and the snowmobile park is "in" Jonesville.
On my way , i'll see everyone there !!
