I decided to try a different route. Ive already paid and downloaded an app and am becoming familiar with it at home. I'll be running a 7 or 8" tablet up high under my roof to keep out of the moisture and sunlight to view. Still need the mounts and another cheapo tablet instead of my good one, but many peeps like the versitility and perks for doing so.....music, all different maps, download multi- vehicle service manuals for different SxSs, etc.

Hi LBR....using a tablet is the latest trend here in Central Oregon, and the Nav device of choice.....any of them with "location/GPS" will work......we are downloading an app like "Backcountry Navigator Pro (about $11) for Android systems, and "Scenic Maps" for ipads.....the most popular tablet being used is a Samsung Galaxy4 8-inch (about $169-189)....after downloading your nav app, no WiFi signal is needed on the trail (no data used) and the larger display screens and detailed maps are pretty good. Ram mounts are used and battery life is long, and the option of powering it up with a USB cord is popular also.....by using a TOPO app like BCNP and also downloading Forest Service MVUM's, and leaving both programs active on your tablet, you can navigate with a TOPO map and see which of the FS's service roads and trails are "open"......

I was looking at GAIA, but found out the one Android phone it wont sync with is what I have now....lol....so Backcrountry was my choice. I run a Lowrance HDS-5M Baja in my race car and my truck has a 7inch LG Tablet that runs LocusPro. I like the Locus Pro quite a bit, it works with my Google Earth KMZ files, so I can exchange route files and waypoints pretty easily.

The Lowrance HDS Series is pretty proven to be the best out there for racing.

My tablet with Locus Pro is tied to my cell phone account. It uses my data plan on the account. So yes, it is tied to it. But with the Locus Pro program, it works great

found out no need to pay and get cell coverage for the gps to work

just connect it to your wi-fi and load the stuff you want and you are good to go

Anyone know what the equivalent would be in the Apple format? I'd like to use my new i Phone the same way.

I have BCN on my phone and found one concession was that I didn't have all of the map grids loaded fully before loosing service in the desert...worked great until we got into an unloaded grid that wouldn't show....it still tracks OK tho, but just shows white gridding.

I just got a Samsung Galaxy3 7" today and will download BCN and more tonight . I got the 7" because it fits on the storage area door on the XP1000. Looking forward to getting out and trying it .

I use BCN on my Samsung cell phone. I will eventually do what Ed did and buy a tablet and mount it in the storage area in the dash. The great thing about the tablet is you get gps and can use it for music too. I am using an iPod now but it will be nice to have it all on one device.

Ed, what are your plans for mounting the tablet? I was hoping someone would end up selling an install kit for doing this but haven't seen one yet. I can fabricate and come up with something. Just thought it would be easier if someone else did all the legwork to figure it out. Lol

Ram is suppose to make some mounting brackets but I think I'm just going to velcro it to the door on the storage compartment . That way it will be down out of the way, shaded , and i'll still be able to use the storage compartment. May end up doing something different but going to try this first.

Yep it ain't the Tablet or Phone

I know, because I have both

The problems with Tablets and phone is most of em are not water-proof, shock-proof

They are so complex that it will take you years to figure it all out on what they are capable of

I am getting older and do not have as much time to waste figuring out a freaking phone or tablet

Getting one of those gadgets is like going to a Mexican place to order Chinese food

Get a unit that is made to be a GPS not a phone or tablet

My Navi has all the topo maps and trails in-stalled, Its Water-proof, shock- proof and I can-not say enough good things about it

Sure I love the tablet, for surfing inter-web, watching Video, music, karaoke, e-mail and so forth

How-ever that is what is was made to do

So the Best GPS is one that is made to be a GPS

The Garmin Nuvi is a Piece of Cake to operate as a GPS,

So there you have the Best GPS IMO

I took fast phils advice and purchased a 7" tablet !! Finally got to try it out this last weekend and I'm very happy with how it works . I did purchase Backcountry Navigator Pro ! there is a free one but purchased the better one for $12 .
