View Full Version : Something broke when installing new belt .
Out on the trail and broke a belt we rolled the primary backwards (by hand) to unjam the new belt and something went crunch.
Engine won't start now. I'm guessing the timing chain or something broke?

Might have jumped the cam chain I've read if you turn the wrong direction it will jump timing. Man that sucks hope you didn't damage anything inside. Good luck
I have that the timing chain can jump on all of the Polaris if the engine is rotated backward !!

Yeah that's probably what happened. Timing jumped. That sucks!
From what I have heard the chain tensioner collapses when you turn the engine in the wrong direction . What direction did you turn it ?

If it is such a big No No there should be a dummie sticker on the clutch cover. There is enough dummies stickers everywhere else on it. Lol I turned it counter clockwise.

The cam chain jumped. WHAT EVER ANYONE DOES WHEN CHANGING YOU BELT DON'T ROTATE YOUR MOTOR BACKWARDS.

Thank you for the information . I would be one of the people that would turn the motor both ways never thinking it would cause a problem.

Yep..I would have done the same mistake to b honest..and I've been fabricating and turning wrenches most of my life...Dam it..
I have read that if you install a manual adjust chain tensioner it won't happen and you won't have the rattle when you first start after sitting a while . Maybe someone could chime in on this.
I've accidently rotated out Rotaxes backwards before will no ill effects, but am going to do same as sweet34 and mark forward arrows on them.....good idea.

If I'm correct the 800 doesn't have a timing chain .

If I'm correct the 800 doesn't have a timing chain .That makes since, as to way they quit making 800 engine
So the pro-stars have timing chain in engine and reverse chain as well in tranny
They sure want you to spend a-lotta money and time on there Piss-Poor Design
I have heard that its not a matter of when it will break, but that it will break
At this time prolly the best running gear, tranny and engine go to Can-Am
