I just seen this today on FB Explorers of the Mojave..
Nightmare Gulch

Kevin this was supposed to be a temp closure and believe that was in the fall of 2013. Repeated attempts to get in touch with the local ranger and the regional manager have not been very successful into getting to know why the canyon was closed to vehicle traffic or when it will re-open to the same. In late 2015 we MTB'ed down the canyon and there were some areas where the canyon wall had slid down but there was not full blockage as we could still ride through it on our MTB's. Not passable to vehicles but something that could be remedied in short order. 4wd high clearance will still be required when and if this blockage ever gets cleared. At this time of yr there is closure of the area due to raptor nesting. For some reason these birds can procreate in the middle of a major city with no problem but in Red Rock they need "peace and quiet" and for humans to not be present. You will have to google to find when this time period is over. However, with that said, if you come in through the Last Chance side of Nightmare you can hike pretty much all the way through it, just don't wander into the open area at the opposite end of Last Chance as that is the raptor nesting area. It's the road that we go on after we cross the hiway by the bill boards when we go to Randsburg , bickle camp etc !!

I will make this a little clearer since I know at least AlfaBaz and RonC will need road names to have a chance at finding the camp area !! LOL On Google Earth the name of the road we are going to camp on is " Last Chance Canyon RD " off of Hiway 14 !!

I was on a forum and they were saying that the trail has been closed full time because of trail damage from a storm !! I guess we'll see when were there next month !!

The Mojave Desert in general, is a high altitude desert. I'm thinking that where we often camp is in the 4,000-5,000 foot elevation range. The ride up to MacGyvers Cabin, goes to over 7,000 feet (we have found snow there in March). It is also usually cooler than Dumont or Ocotillo Wells. There are lots of mining camps, Randsburg (a living ghost town), petroglyphs, and some rock crawling. Take lots of gas!
