Kbachell will be having a ride in the Rubicon August 18/19- stage at Loon Lake, camping at Gatekeeper (just a few minutes into the trail) Friday night, August 17th. Latecomers can arrive on Saturday morning and meet up at Gatekeeper. Camping at Buck Island camping area Saturday night. This is an "advanced driver" run so be prepared, as Barry (alfabaz) explained, it is rocky and challenging. Also be prepared for the cold, as it will likely be near 100 degrees in the valley, but could get down to the low 40's at night because of the 7000 foot altitude. Also, fire permits are needed, even to run a camp stove, and often, fire restrictions are in place by August, prohibiting campfires. You will need to haul everything necessary to camp, as there will be no access to your tow vehicle, on the trail, or camping, on Saturday night.

It is a slow moving run. If you love running 40mph on dirt roads, but don't like slow technical trails that often require teamwork (people spotting and directing your moves through the rocks, as well as stacking rocks, in places, to help ramp up and down), this is not the trip for you. There will be lots of combined experience, Neil, Ben and I, along with others yet to sign up, to help, so it will be challenging and LOTS of fun. Not required, but for example, I carry a belt, along with necessary tools for changing, several of us will have compressed air and tire plugs, quart of oil, battery jumpbox, rags, lug socket/wrench, first aid kit, shovel, hatchet, Rugged Radio (or similar HAM radio), and, since I drive a RZR, a fire extinguisher... lol. Pack a bathing suit and towel to swim/wash off @ buck island reservoir Saturday, usual camping equip (tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, chair, flashlight, etc). Won't need extra fuel (round trip is less than 40 miles if we do the whole trail from end to end). There are pit toilets along the trail and near campsite on Saturday, and 10-15 minute walk from campsite on Friday night. There are no other services available on the trail. No trash receptacles, Starbucks, or 7-11 so you need to provide everything you might need, like food, toilet paper, etc and haul out all trash generated. Latecomers can arrive on Saturday and one of us will guide them in Saturday morning around 8:00am.

The following has worked great for Ben and me. Crank your spring compression down as far as you can get it. You want as much ground clearance as possible. I usually end up with about 14 inches in my 4 seater after it's loaded with gear. Just remember to clean the threads very well on your shock body before adjusting. Turn your rebound knobs on the shocks to full hard. That will keep you from banging as much when your tires drop off the rocks. Disconnect your sway bar completely. You will need as much flex as you can get. It makes a huge difference. Lastly, take off your fenders and leave them at home.

As far as gear, Ken pretty much laid it out perfectly. But, I would say if we can split up some of the stuff, we should do it for weight savings. We don't need 4 BBQ's and 7 air compressors.

It is intimidating at the beginning, but 15 minutes into it, you will wonder why you didn't do the trail sooner.

Looks like fun! Hadn't heard of this event; there are so many throughout the summer, on the Rubicon. It looks like we will have a smaller group than you will be joining, so look for us as we come through Saturday morning. I will be on the trail at least twice and likely 3 times this year, with my Landcruiser or RZR.

Kbachell

Were you up there with Ben?That was the original plan... I ended up going to Buck Island Friday night and then two of the four vehicles I was traveling with were having trouble so we limped them down to Rubicon Springs and camped there Saturday night, and went out Cadillac on Sunday, so we never saw Ben. Original plan included backtracking from Buck Island on Saturday morning in the hope of meeting up with his group and traveling back to Buck, in case anyone needed mechanical assistance or help spotting, etc and then camping with him Saturday night, but the vehicles would not cooperate.

Hadn't even thought about it. Often times, on Rubicon, we have a potluck, but that is when I am in my Landcruiser with lots of room to carry stuff; We usually have "Taco Night" where everyone brings their own taco meat and something to add (Salsa, Carnitas, Beans, Onion, etc). I will be taking a small ice chest, small one-burner stove but no barbeque and all the signs say "No Fires" in Eldorado National Forest. Any suggestions for dinner on Saturday night?

Think that should be good.

The rears were easy and the passenger front but I sent over an hour doing the driver front before I just pulled it off and did it that way because I couldn’t use the tool. But what I do is compress the springs and then I can turn the top by hand.

I don’t use any tools.... except to loosen up the lock ring. I blow off the threads with air, brush threads with toothbrush, WD40 the very bottom of the spring where it touches the plate. Then rotate the springs which move the collar down. Adjusted all 4 in about 1-1-5 hours[emoji1360]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180813/c3cc705137fdbf97455be39d2cec4ed8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180813/dccb1fd7e59a76bef1809a5229501e57.jpg

Heads up guys... slight change of plans that shouldn't negatively affect anyone (actually, I think it will make the ride better!!), but just wanted to let everyone know that we are tossing around the idea of NOT staying at Buck Island, but rather, continuing through the trail, up Cadillac Hill and then turning around somewhere beyond (perhaps depending upon the time of day at this point) and going back to camp at Rubicon Springs Saturday evening. There is a $15 fee, per vehicle, at the springs and they have pit toilets. The reasoning for the change is that SxS's move relatively quickly through Rubicon, compared to a Jeep or other full-sized vehicle, so this will keep us occupied for longer, and give more the the "Rubicon Experience" to the newbies that may not have been through the complete trail. Let me know what you think.

This new tool got all four adjusted in 15 minutes... well... after taking 45 minutes to make the tool... I just cleaned the threads, and used some of my Gun Cleaning/Lubricating spray and then spun them down with my "crows foot" with a floor jack lifting the vehicle to relieve pressure from the spring.

Definitely a great ride with GREAT people. We had 10 vehicles for the majority of the run with 2 or three other vehicles with Jeff's group, out ahead. Special thanks to Ben and his brother Greg for all the effort they put in guiding everyone and Ben's AWESOME trail fix on a broken RZR Lower A-Arm! Also, thank you Jeff, for holding some camp sites for us, and helping to pull some of the members through the deep water crossing. Hopefully everyone had fun. I know sometimes the Rubicon Trail can be a bit overwhelming for people that have not done a lot of rock crawling, but I did not hear many complaints. Everyone worked together to enhance the experience for all involved; love that kind of teamwork. The sane people stayed behind, Saturday evening, while 6 of us "crazy" people went on an evening run up Cadillac Hill to McKinney Lake and returned about the time it became dark. My wife, Teresa, took tons of pics, but we got in around 10:00pm last night, so nothing has been posted yet.

Sarah and I would also like to say thanks to all who put this ride together. Ken, thanks for taking us up Cadillac. That part of the trail was what I was really looking forward to doing. Other than a bent radius arm. The machine survived. We will upload pic and videos of the ride soon. Thanks everyone for the fun weekend.
