It’s hard to keep the experienced riders interested. Alan, you’ll notice that I changed direction on one part of the route because you thought that it may be too difficult for a large group. Also, I pre ride my routes 2 to 3 times before a group ride, so I have a little bit invested in it. So it’s pretty disappointing to get negative feedback. Scott is right, I always add something a little bit technical because it always gives us some good campfire stories. The first half, I would give a 6 because of the delays and the second half, a 9 or ten. I have done this one with a small group of experienced riders and it was a solid 10.

I always think it’s a 10. It’s gonna be a little bit different than last year and no more difficult than last year. There will be some challenging areas so consider yourself warned... lol. Really cool trail IMO.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkWe had 33 to start with to be exact. We may be even larger this year. A couple of years ago, a guy did a fund raiser and had a very large ride. If I remember correctly, he said BLM told anything over 40 he needed a permit. So in his case, to get around it, he split the ride in three, by having different start times. The people who went still said they had had a blast. I understand in your case you are not looking at different start times but different directions. Just some thought.

I think the ride was awesome last year with 30+. I also see the benefit to "smaller/faster" groups. Easier to keep track of everyone and the front of the group won't be waiting as long for the back of the group... Either way I'm here to ride!

I know when we snowmobile, we always break up the larger groups. We try and keep it under 7 a group. We usually have a meet spot for lunch, then break off again in our group. This also helps keep everyone in there comfort zone.

Not only can it get super dusty there stretched out for miles... so much so that when the last guy shows for lunch the leader wants to take off again. With the radios and several of us that have signed up have been there before this could be fun to try!

I was up in that canyon a few years ago in April with a large group. we met a large group of jeeps and it quickly became extremely congested with rigs everywhere... it had rained the night before and was so slick it was difficult to pass them with out sliding off trail or colliding with each other. A jeep moving around started sliding and to avoid them I had to seriously gas it that ended up throwing a roost of mud through there open side window.

We stage at the end of Johnson lane , it turns into dirt . The main ride is on Saturday , some people are going to camp at the staging area Friday and Saturday night !!

Yes, they are also coming to this ride. A few people from there are camping Friday-Sunday as well

Even if they weren’t with us, the area is so big that we probably wouldn’t meet them anywhere, I’m pretty sure they’re with us. It’s easy to find, Take Johnson Lane east from HWY 395 to end of pavement.

Hey Jeff, are there any plans to ride on Sunday morning? We will be camping at the trailhead and since it is a 3.5 hour drive, one-way, for us, a couple of us are planning to ride before we have to head home. We have discussed the possibility of either riding more trails at Johnson Lane, or heading toward Washoe Lake (or Dayton) unloading, and then riding up to Virginia City and having lunch before loading up and heading home. Anyone else have any suggestions or want to join?

I usually camp right at the end of the pavement. Advantage is that I don't have to go through the little dip in the road right at the staging area. Disadvantage is that it can be noisy.

The wide, open area you are mentioning is the predominant camping area. I think I can get my trailer in there (42 foot toy hauler), and I've seen lots of other guys go in there to camp. Should be a great group area!

We are definitely camping Scott. I have to justify my new trailer. LOL. I know Craig Bommarito and his wife are camping (I don't know there screen name) and I believe Ken (kbatchell) is also. I'm sure there are more but I don't know personally. Jeff (batman) hasn't made up his mind about camping or getting a hotel yet.

I see area 1, area 2, and a blue flag (is this the #3 everyone is referring to?) but by the directions Jeff provided, I read "stay to the right at the fork" to mean either hang a right and go almost south, where the #1 is circled and then make a left just before I see the big white "Google" written in the ground (LOL) OR, more likely, go straight @ #1, pass #2 and go to the blue flag. I went to google earth, but I cannot see the "gully" talked about, but maybe it will be obvious when I get there.

The trail was really beat up and potions of El dorado canyon was washed out in places but we found a way through. The ride clocked 72 miles by the gps and we averaged a speed of 15 mph. We stopped 5 times for breaks that lasted 30 to 45 min and one stop for a break down. Nobody had any flats and the group kept up a good pace and paid attention to staying on course. Don’t let the average speed fool you as there is a very technical section that you can only creep through. Hope to see y’all next weekend[emoji106]

Not sure if I could do the 14th. I have to fly to Phoenix on either Sunday or Monday, but I don't know which day yet. Weather.com is currently showing early morning rain then cloudy on Saturday so it might not be an issue unless you are worried about the creek flows.

After checking out the weather report, I would agree that it is a good call. They are predicting mudslides and flooding from this storm. Sorry I won't be able to make it; I was on the recent prerun and encourage everyone that can make the 14th date to go. It is an awesome place to ride!
