I like rope. You can handle it without gloves and dont have to worry about getting your hands cut. When it breaks it just falls to the ground and you can tie a square knot in it and be back in action in a few minutes.
The only down side I see is it is more susceptible to frays from rocks, roots, etc.
Rope:
Pros: less dangerous if it happens to break.
can tie a knot if it does break and keep winching
lighter
smaller so you can hold more length on the spool
doesn't cut your hand
Cons: Will dry rot after a few years if you mud a lot and become weaker.

I like the rope because if I have to wrap it around a tree to it's self it doesn't kink .

tip on the rope lines....
1. pre strech it before first use
2. if it gets wet or muddy when you have a chance clean it with fresh water and spool out and let dry a pain yes but this will make it last longer.

I have rope in my winch , I like it because it's easier to work with.
I have cable on my winch , just can't seem to trust rope.

Synthetic rope. Its easier to work with and I've had no problems with it. I do make sure to spool it out and clean it up if I've been in the muck.
